We have used Apples & Pears for quite a few years, first with my daughter, now my son. It has been absolutely brilliant. For my daughter, we completed book A and B, and started C, before her spelling really took off, so we stopped using it. For my son, we have used books A, B, C and D. He is now 10 and has been assessed as dyslexic. He always struggled with spelling, and even from a very young age, was unable to use phonics to decode words, seemingly learning to read by either memorising whole words, or working out the word from the context. This strategy was fine for his reading, but spelling has been a real challenge. It was getting to the stage where he was actively avoiding writing very much at school, for fear of not being able to spell words. The breaking of words into morphemes and the repetition offered by completing one section of Apples and Pears each evening has made a real difference to his spelling confidence, reinforcing the spelling rules learns at school, but giving him extra practice at home. The sessions are just the right length for him to tackle, and he enjoys the variety of little puzzles that crop up, such as word searches or crosswords. The mastery tests give him something to aim for and make him (and us!) feel proud of how far he has come.
Over the years I have recommended this series to a number of other parents with children who are struggling with spellings – and I shall continue to do so!

My oldest, just turned nine, really took off with reading after Fast Track, and we have steadily been making our way through Apples & Pears for writing and spelling. She loves to write stories and letters, and I attribute much of that to her spelling and sentence fluency!

Thanks for these great resources! My daughter has missed something in her spelling. She attends mainstream school and is ahead in reading, comprehension, mathematics and everything else. But is below in spelling. We’ve had her hearing tested and is all fine. Your program is helping her bridge whatever gaps she’s missed in her learning for spelling and building her confidence really well!

By far the best resources i’ve found. My son is not the confident sort and has trouble learning as he thinks when you correct him his ‘stupid’ and once he thinks you think his stupid he just loses his ability to regulate his emotions, and learning goes out the window. These books move at a pace that is good for learners like him, not too slow that he feels like a baby but fast enough that he doesn’t sit and dwell. It is very repetitive which allows him build that confidence, and he also knows what to expect as far as learning which eliminates that am stupid at learning new materials thing he likes to do to himself. I find completing one lesson per session is best as it keeps the flow going and helps solidify the patterns his working on rather than coming back tomorrow, they really don’t take that long and i believe its more beneficial to do it one sitting. It’s a very simple but smart way to learn. Thank you to the creators, I imagine my son is only one of thousands that your resources have help turn from an unconfident child to a beautifully confident student.

I just want to say how much this program has helped my daughter. She’s always been an excellent advanced reader, but her spelling was atrocious. We started at level 21 of book A towards the end of Year 3, (at which point she couldn’t spell park!) and she had come on so much by the end of Year 4.
As a side note, as a someone who learnt English as a second language, I am learning a lot too!
